How marketing actually works: a beginner's guide

Marketing explained simply: audience, offer, channels, the funnel and measurement — and how the pieces fit together.

Marketing is three questions

Who are you trying to reach? What are you offering them? Where will they see it? Almost every marketing decision is an answer to one of those three questions. Tactics change every year; those questions don't.

1. The audience

Be specific. "Small businesses" is too wide; "plumbers in small towns who get most jobs by phone" is something you can act on. The more precisely you know who you serve, the easier it is to write a message they recognise themselves in.

2. The offer

An offer is not just a product. It's the problem you solve, the result people get, the price, and the reason to trust you. A clear offer beats a clever ad. If people don't understand what you do in a few seconds, no channel will fix that.

3. The channels

Channels are where people meet you: search engines, social media, paid ads, email, word of mouth, marketplaces. Search catches people who are already looking. Social and ads interrupt people who aren't looking yet. Email keeps in touch with people who already know you. Start with one or two channels and do them well.

The funnel, without the jargon

People rarely buy the first time they see you. They notice you, look closer, compare, and then decide. A "funnel" is just the path between those steps. Each step needs something: an ad or post to get noticed, a page that explains, proof like reviews, and an easy way to get in touch.

Measure, then adjust

Track a few numbers that matter: how many people visit, how many contact you, and how many become customers. If many visit but few contact you, fix the page or the offer. If few visit, fix the channel. Change one thing at a time so you know what worked.
