Google Ads vs Meta ads: how paid ads work

The difference between search ads and social ads, how ad auctions and targeting work, and how to tell if ads are worth it.

Two different moments

Google Ads mostly reach people while they search, so they already want something. Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) reach people while they scroll, so you have to catch their interest first. Search ads capture demand; social ads create it.

How the auction works

Ads aren't sold at a fixed price. Every time an ad can show, the platform runs a quick auction. What you're willing to pay matters, but so does how relevant and useful your ad seems. A better ad can win cheaper.

Targeting

On Google you mainly choose search phrases and locations. On Meta you describe an audience — location, age, interests — or let the platform find people similar to your customers. In both cases, the platform's automation does more of the work than it used to, so clear goals and good tracking matter.

The page matters as much as the ad

An ad only gets the click. The page it leads to has to match the promise and make the next step obvious. Many campaigns fail because of a confusing page, not a bad ad.

Are ads worth it?

Compare what a customer costs you through ads with what a customer is worth to you. Start with a small budget, measure contacts or sales — not just clicks — and only spend more once the numbers make sense.
